マクドナルド奨学基金支援の会（古川恭司会長）では、平成２５年度より北海道立利尻高等学校生徒を、ラナルド・マクドナルド¹ゆかりの地として、アメリカポートランド市へ短期留学研修として派遣しており、ポートランド在住のマクドナルド友の会谷田部会長には現地コーディネートなど、大変お世話をいただいております。今回は谷田部会長ご夫妻の来日に合わせ利尻島を訪問いただきました。
　１２月１４日には利尻町役場を訪問いただき、保野利尻町長と懇談を行い、次年度以降の短期留学生の受け入れや、ポートランド、利尻の話題などで親交を深めていただきました。翌１５日には、利尻高等学校において「高等学校英語力向上事業」講演会・成果報告会で講師として「Real MacDonald!～私のアメリカ生活５０年余～」と題し講演を行っていただきました。

 ¹ ラナルド・マクドナルド（Ranald　MacDonald）
【鯨が開いた鎖国の扉　ラナルド・マクドナルド渡島】 
嘉永元年（１８４８）７月初めに鎖国下の利尻島に一人のアメリカ人が上陸しました。鎖国の日本に入ってみようということです。そのためにハワイから捕鯨船に乗り込み、捕鯨漁が終わってから単身ボートに乗り込み、利尻島を目指し漂流を装って上陸しました。 
捕鯨船の海員誌で日本情報に接し、潜入方法を見つけたマクドナルド。利尻島に上陸してから、宗谷・松前を経て長崎に送られていきます。長崎では当時のオランダ通辞たちの要望から英会話を教えました。

Mr. Yatabe, the President of Fellowship for MacDonald, and Mrs. Yatabe came to Japan and greeted the Mayor of Rishiri

MacDonald Scholarship Foundation Support Association (Chairman Kyoji Hurukawa) sends students of Rishiri High School established by Hokkaido to Portland in the United States of America for short term study since 2013 because Rishiri Island has historical relationship with Ranald MacDonald¹ who was the first English teacher in Japan more than 150 years ago.  
Mr. Yatabe, the president of Fellowship for MacDonald, who lives in Portland, and Mrs. Yatabe are of great help for the short term study as coordinators in the U.S.  Recently they came to Japan and Rishiri Island.  Chairman Kyoji also came to Rishiri to see them.
On December 14, 2017, Mr. and Mrs. Yatabe visited Rishiri Town Hall to meet with Mr. Hono, the Mayor of Rishiri.  They had friendly talk with each other on the next short term study program in Portland and other topics relating to Portland and Rishiri.
On December 15 Mr. Yatabe gave a speech titled “Real MacDonald!  My American life over 50 years” at the meeting of Project for Improving High School English and Result Report at Rishiri High School.

¹Ranald MacDonald
“Whaling opened the closed door: Ranald MacDonald came to the island”
In early July in 1848 (the first year of嘉永 ”Kaei” in Edo Era, according to Japanese traditional calendar), a man named Ranald MacDonald landed on Rishiri Island under Japan’s closed-door policy. 
To come to Japan, he had board a whaling ship and had found out a way to enter Japan in a journal of the ship.  After whaling had finished he had got on a boat himself and headed for Rishiri Island to pretend a castaway on the island.  
Landing on Rishiri Island, he was sent to Nagasaki through Soya and Matsumae.  In Nagasaki he taught English language to Dutch-Japanese interpreters on demand at that time. 
Searching history for Ranald MacDonald who landed on Rishiri in Edo Era, you will find his deep relationship to whaling and the end of the era in Japan (cited from “MacDonald illegally immigrated into closed and isolated Japan,” culture and history in Rishiri Town website).
